Too often I come across women who are run ragged from looking after everyone else. They are frazzled, stressed and vibrate an energy of chaos. I see what they can’t, or don’t want to, or have blocked.
When asked, “what do you do for yourself? To take time out? To fill your own cup?” I get a blank stare quickly followed by “I don’t have time for that”.
Why do we make life so hard for ourselves? Saying yes to things we don’t want to do to please others, putting our own health & well being last and then wondering why we have no energy, can’t lose that weight, and just accepting that this, and physical pain, is part of the aging process…
Well, I’m calling BS on that.
We’ve been saying this for years and in the last week I’ve heard two of the people I follow and respect say exactly the same thing – WE HAVE TO PUT OUR OWN OXYGEN MASK ON FIRST.
Our health & wellness is OUR responsibility, no one else’s (unless of course you’re a small child then I would ask – why are you feeding your children stuff you wouldn’t let your dog eat?)
Jim Rohn said – “I will take care of me for you, and you take care of you for me.” Too many people don’t do that because they are too busy looking after everyone else and not taking care of themselves.
Back to the oxygen mask analogy – on a plane when the flight attendants are giving the safety instructions they always advise that when the oxygen masks falls from up ahead to make sure you put your OWN on first before helping anyone else, including your children. If you run out of oxygen because you’re too busy helping everyone else you’re no good to anyone. You’ll be unconscious…or worse!! Dead!!!
But so often in life we don’t put our oxygen mask on first. And then we become stressed, over or under weight, our bodies don’t move as freely, we have pain, we lack energy, and we succumb to disease. We don’t enjoy our loved ones as much as we could and should and while we are busy trying to please everyone we’re not pleasing anyone – especially ourselves!!!
I’ll say it again – “I will take care of me for you, and you take care of you for me.”
So what does taking care of yourself look like?
Moving your body and having fun. Remember to include some resistance work to keep those muscles healthy and active.
Mind Set – something just for you that fills your cup. Morning tea with your girlfriends, a walk along the beach with your significant other, 30 minutes sitting in the sunshine reading, meditating, doing nothing!!! Whatever it is for you…just 30 minutes a day. You don’t have time? MAKE TIME! This is a priority and I am willing to bet that if you sat down and really worked it out you would find that there are a lot of things you say yes to that do absolute nothing for you that you could ditch.
Speaking of priorities – Sleep is one of them. 7.5 – 9 hours each night. It will make a massive difference believe me.
And stress less. Taking time to get back into the parasympathetic nervous system, your relaxed more than being in the stress state. You want better health? Then this is key.
Nutrition is key – Our choices will either serve and nourish us or work against us. We want to consume whole real foods SUPPORTED by quality shakes and supplements. Remember, our bodies need vitamins, minerals, fibre, quality carbohydrates, healthy fats, proteins, amino acids, phytonutrients, and antioxidants NOT unhealthy fats, excess sugar, white flour, excess salt, preservatives, food coloring.
